CHAPTER
The lights from his Jeep cut through the gathering dusk as Logan headed south on the expressway. It had been a long day, and if things were different, heâd have booked them into a hotel on the island rather than make the three and a half hour drive back to Seattle. There probably would be vacancies even in high season on a Monday, but he couldnât let Shona have a room by herself, and since she wasnât about to agree to share one with him, thereâd been no choice except to head home.
âYouâre pretty quiet,â he said. âHow are you feeling?â
âTired.â
âYouâre not sore?â
âI have a few muscles I was unaware of announcing their presence, but overall, itâs not bad.â
Logan scowled. Heâd chosen the park because most of the paths were easy, but theyâd taken one marked moderate. âI shouldnât have let you talk me into hiking that last trail.â
âYouâre kidding, right? That walk had some of the most spectacular views we saw all day. Iâm not that uncomfortable and it was worth it.â Shona reached out and rested her hand on his knee. âIs hiking something you do often?â
He paused to savor her touch. It was especially sweet because sheâd initiated contact between them. âNot as often as Iâd like, but yeah, I go out fairly regularly.â
Shonaâs fingers tensed against his leg. âI wouldnât mind doing this again.â
One side of Loganâs mouth crooked up. This was still a big step for herâsuggesting they do something together. Sure, sheâd invited him for coffee and to her art show, but mostly she waited for him to do the asking. It was another sign she was becoming comfortable with him and he liked it. A lot.
âIâm glad,â Logan said, âbecause there are more places Iâd love to show you.â It was too damn bad, though, that she was a dormant. If she were Gineal, they could travel via a transit and not waste time driving to and from the trails. That thought spoiled his good mood. If she were Gineal, a lot of other things would be easier, tooâincluding dating her after his assignment was finished. The ceannardsâLogan decided to worry about the councilâs reaction later. âThere are even a couple of trails in Seattle that are worth the time.â
Shona relaxed her hold on his leg. âIâd like that. Maybe we could go shopping and you could help me pick out some boots. I want to make sure I get the right kind.â
Loganâs lips twitched, but he controlled the smile. He hated to shop, but the suggestion was the third sign in a matter of minutes that she was at ease with him. âWhy donât we take a few more hikes before you invest in boots. One day isnât enough to know for sure if itâs something youâll enjoy.â
She was quiet for a minute. âBut you enjoy it.â
âI do. Iâll make a deal with you. If we do this a couple more times and you still like it, Iâll do the shopping thingâjust for boots, though.
