CHAPTER

The lights from his Jeep cut through the gathering dusk as Logan headed south on the expressway. It had been a long day, and if things were different, he’d have booked them into a hotel on the island rather than make the three and a half hour drive back to Seattle. There probably would be vacancies even in high season on a Monday, but he couldn’t let Shona have a room by herself, and since she wasn’t about to agree to share one with him, there’d been no choice except to head home.

“You’re pretty quiet,” he said. “How are you feeling?”

“Tired.”

“You’re not sore?”

“I have a few muscles I was unaware of announcing their presence, but overall, it’s not bad.”

Logan scowled. He’d chosen the park because most of the paths were easy, but they’d taken one marked moderate. “I shouldn’t have let you talk me into hiking that last trail.”

“You’re kidding, right? That walk had some of the most spectacular views we saw all day. I’m not that uncomfortable and it was worth it.” Shona reached out and rested her hand on his knee. “Is hiking something you do often?”

He paused to savor her touch. It was especially sweet because she’d initiated contact between them. “Not as often as I’d like, but yeah, I go out fairly regularly.”

Shona’s fingers tensed against his leg. “I wouldn’t mind doing this again.”

One side of Logan’s mouth crooked up. This was still a big step for her—suggesting they do something together. Sure, she’d invited him for coffee and to her art show, but mostly she waited for him to do the asking. It was another sign she was becoming comfortable with him and he liked it. A lot.

“I’m glad,” Logan said, “because there are more places I’d love to show you.” It was too damn bad, though, that she was a dormant. If she were Gineal, they could travel via a transit and not waste time driving to and from the trails. That thought spoiled his good mood. If she were Gineal, a lot of other things would be easier, too—including dating her after his assignment was finished. The ceannards—Logan decided to worry about the council’s reaction later. “There are even a couple of trails in Seattle that are worth the time.”

Shona relaxed her hold on his leg. “I’d like that. Maybe we could go shopping and you could help me pick out some boots. I want to make sure I get the right kind.”

Logan’s lips twitched, but he controlled the smile. He hated to shop, but the suggestion was the third sign in a matter of minutes that she was at ease with him. “Why don’t we take a few more hikes before you invest in boots. One day isn’t enough to know for sure if it’s something you’ll enjoy.”

She was quiet for a minute. “But you enjoy it.”

“I do. I’ll make a deal with you. If we do this a couple more times and you still like it, I’ll do the shopping thing—just for boots, though.
